This cultural retreat was created out of an idea that Huili and I had when we started planning a ‘yoga’ retreat in 2019. With time to think and plan, we realized that we needed to create a retreat that centered ‘local’ culture.

The thing is, the word ‘local’ in Malaysia is a term that has been politically weaponized to take land rights away from the Indigenous people. So as a Malaysian and Singaporean, we understood what we needed to do as yoga teachers and practitioners - and that was to create a retreat that centered a decolonized local culture.

So we contacted Gerimis, a grassroots organization whose ongoing work uplifts the crafts and wisdom of the Orang Asli people and asked if we could uplift their mission through this retreat. And, we’re so glad they said yes.

With both of us having cultural roots, family and friends in Malaysia - we invited our friends and family who wanted to share this mission with us.

Because of this, we hold the Cultural Retreat at an eco-resort called Gopeng Riverstones, built by Huili’s brother himself. Fun fact, you’ll see Huili’s family members helping us with making this first retreat a memorable success!

We invited our friend and home-chef, Sumathi along with her sister and Bharatanatyam teacher, Logeswari to share their art and wisdom with us through cooking and dance.

Our hope for the retreat is for folks to join us and experience a retreat that will inspire them with an embodied experience of decolonization as they continue on their wellness journey.

RETREAT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Fresh ingredients, locally cooked

Locally cooked by Putri (a village local) breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between. We’re big on food in Malaysia, so best bet you won’t be hangry.

Royal Belum State Park

Also a UNESCO heritage site, a certified guide will be bringing us on a day trip where we will visit the Temiar Tribe and swim by the waterfall with fishies.

Local hidden gems

Our daily activities are planned as opportunities to engage with the locals. Whether it’s through the neighborhood market, dance, yoga or walks by the river - there will be something for everyone.

I took a little trip around the world a few weeks back and it was a much needed shift in speed, energy, perspective, and things I’m probably not aware of yet.
