Skill in action

Skill in Action is a body of evolving work designed to explore systems of power and oppression, the intersection of social justice and yoga, external and internalized patterns of oppression, power and privilege, and how we can respond to the current cultural and political challenges through practices of self-study, movement, pranayama, contemplation and collective action.

Founded and led by Michelle C. Johnson, Skill in Action emerged from a deep desire to practice actionable yoga off the mat and outside of the confines of a yoga studio. Of the many recent programs to emerge from Michelle’s continued work is the evolution of a mentorship training designed to support a curated group of facilitators to lead Skill in Action workshops and expand the reach of this important, necessary work.

Each facilitator brings a unique perspective to their offerings. We look forward to offering workshops in your community or studio—online and beyond.

For me, as one of the facilitators, Skill in Action has informed my work on branding in a way that traditional branding has ignored. More than ever, I am called to fill in these gaps and one of the ways I know how is through offering Skill in Action workshops in your spaces with your community.

Build the capacity to be with what is happening without becoming overwhelmed or consumed by it and how to stay engaged in the work of creating conditions for our collective liberation.

We are wading through war, grief, injustice, and rights and protections being stripped away from groups who are less proximal to social and institutional power. As we lean into the truth of what is happening versus bypassing the truth, we are called to transform ourselves, relationships, institutions, and culture in order to create a just world.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • While pre-work is optional, we do suggest that you read Skill in Action to get an idea of how the content will be facilitated.

  • The first edition of Skill in Action lit a fire in the wellness and yoga industries, which led Michelle to write the second edition of Skill in Action. This edition was deeply informed by her interactions with various people across the globe who had the same questions she did about creating a just world through the practice of yoga and creating a world in which we all are free. This new edition of the book is a deeper dive into how we can engage our yoga practice to create a more just and equitable world.

  • We are always looking for new and interesting ways to collaborate with people near and far. If you have any questions about the work we offer, and how we might be of support, please reach out.
